The original Hunt Middle School building was constructed in 1958. Thanks to local school construction bond voters, a new 600-student capacity building featuring maker space, a stage, rooms for band, choir, and orchestra as well as a new track and fields and outdoor areas opened in September 2021.

ABOUT THE PROJECT         

Originally constructed in 1958 as "one of the most imaginative in the nation," Hunt Middle School was closed in 2010 and then functioned as one of two transition sites the district uses during school construction projects.
 
The new Hunt will open as a comprehensive middle school for West End and Fircrest families in fall 2021. It will sit in the same area as the old main building, with the main entrance on South 10th Street, about opposite of South Whitman Street. The round building at Mildred and South 10th will remain. 

To ensure safety, the Hunt site is now closed to the public, including all fields and access points. 
 
The new building will have maker space, a space for culinary arts, a stage, and rooms for band, choir and orchestra. Outside, students will have a covered play area, along with a new track and fields and other outdoor recreational areas.
 
The new Hunt Middle School will alleviate overcrowding at Wainwright, Mason and Truman. Elementary schools that will feed into the Hunt boundary are all or some portions of Geiger, DeLong, Whittier, Franklin and Jefferson.

This project is funded in part by the $500 million school construction bond voters passed in 2013 and the $535 bond voters approved in 2020.
