Message from the Principal:

Welcome Hunt Thunder,

We are so excited to welcome you to the Hunt Family.  My name is Kim Messersmith and I proudly serve as Hunt Middle School’s principal.  Every day at Hunt teachers are driven to inspire learning and committed to support students.

Hunt Middle School focuses on the whole child. We offer programs that help students excel academically as well as connect ideas across content areas, enrichment so that students have opportunities to experience the Tacoma community, and social interactions to develop positive relationships with their peers and teachers.

  • Our school day consists of six periods so that students receive a longer block of instruction with first class teachers. Academically we will be offering the core subjects such as Literature/Literacy, Science, History, Math and a series of electives that every student will be able to experience before leaving middle school.  These electives include PE, broadcasting, leadership, exploring technology, culinary arts, art, movement/dance, and music whether it be instrumental or musical theatre.  All of our courses are integrated with one another and interact with the community so that students can see the real-world application.
  • Hunt believes heavily in teaching the whole child! We teach and emphasize life-long values through the IB character traits, participation in after school enrichment through our clubs and athletics, and a restorative approach to conflict resolution.  In addition, we will be building a community service component so that our students can participate in giving back to the community.

Over the past decade, Hunt has been closed and served as a transition site for schools that were in the process of their remodels.  We are on a mission to provide a positive place in the neighborhood that is full of learning, laughter, and community connection!  On behalf of the Hunt team, I thank you for your partnership and together we will continue to do marvelous work.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.  You can contact myself or any staff member at (253) 571-2283 or email me at
