About

Hunt Middle School in West Tacoma originally opened in 1958. In 2010, the Tacoma Public School district closed Hunt. Voters approved construction bonds in 2013 and 2020 to fund a new $48 million Hunt Middle School, now under construction and due to be completed in August 2021. The school will open in fall 2021 and serve as a brand new, International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) school.

The IB MYP will be our lens at Hunt, emphasizing intellectual and academic rigor. We will make practical connections between our studies and the real world, preparing us for success in high school and in life. An important part of that learning is exploring the interconnectedness of all things, from art (dance, music, culinary, media), to science, to language arts, to mathematics, to social studies, to technology, to athletics, and more.

The IB MYP spells out what’s in store for everyone at Hunt:

  • build confidence in managing our own learning

  • learn by doing, connecting the classroom to the larger world

  • outperform in critical academic skills

  • consistently have greater success in IB Diploma Program examinations (if a student chooses to go that path)

  • thrive in positive school cultures where we are engaged and motivated to excel

  • develop an understanding of global challenges and a commitment to act as responsible citizens

We are very excited for this fun journey. We are ready to make history with you at the new Hunt. Check out the link below for updates on its construction. Exciting! GO HUNT THUNDER!!!
